Brief
A 1980’s building in Clerkenwell has been refurbished to create unique new offices for advertising agency Fold 7. into were appointed as lighting design consultants to work alongside Paul Crofts Studio and briefed to design a minimal lighting scheme which included hints at the quirky side of the client.
Concept
The double height main space was redesigned to include a sunken seating area and a new staircase. To create a sense of intimacy and an inviting atmosphere while retaining the bright and open feel of the space the focus here was on discreet lighting details. This included linear LED beneath the sunken seats, recessed handrail lighting and lighting to the underside of the staircase. In the breakout cafe/bar area surface mounted downlights and feature wall, table and pendant lights produce a relaxed and multi-use environment. Open plan meeting areas have designated lighting for each, to show division of space, and theatrical track-mounted spotlights with barn door attachments highlight artwork in meeting rooms. The main working areas utilise a combination of oversized feature pendants and functional surface mounted downlights for the correct light levels.
Result
The refurbished Fold 7 offices in Clerkenwell have a sense of minimal modernity, but also an element of spontaneity in the designs. The sculptures by Czech artist Michal Trpák hanging above the entrance creates an entirely unique space and the lighting scheme was designed to match this approach. A combination of carefully placed feature lighting and details with well-lit functional spaces overall creates a bright, modern yet informal interior.
